CAR SERVICING

Are you looking for a reputable garage to service your car? If you are unsure of what's involved or how much you should be paying, then fear not... We've answered a few of the most commonly asked questions by motorists.

WHEN SHOULD YOU SERVICE YOUR CAR?

Most new cars include a "warning system" that informs the driver when the car is due for service (this is usually indicated in "miles". for example, your car service is due in 1000 miles). You should generally ensure that your vehicle has a "full" service at least once a year, or every 12000 miles. An "interim" service is advisable at 6000 miles or 6 months and "major" service every 24000 miles, or every 24 months.

HOW MUCH SHOULD A CAR SERVICE COST?

The price of a car service will vary slightly, but the average cost of a basic car service is £125. A lot of dealerships offer a service plan with the vehicle. There are plenty of offers and deals around for "cheap" car servicing. You should confirm how many points are checked as part of any car service offer. If any faults are found during the car service you will be required to pay extra the cost of any repairs, replacements or new parts.

WHAT SHOULD A CAR SERVICE INCLUDE?

A 50-point check is usually carried out for the interim service. A full service will generally include a minimum 60-point check and a major service will cover an approximate 75-point check. These points can involve up to 50 or more components, systems checks and adjustments including engine oil change and/or filter replacement. Lights check, tyres, exhaust and operations of brakes and steering. Also, the engine should be 'tuned' to run in peak condition. Here is an example of the main points of a Service Checklist:

  • - SERVICE PREPARATION & ROAD TEST
  • - ENGINE
  • - FUEL
  • - DRIVE SYSTEM & BRAKES
  • - STEERING & SUSPENSION
  • - TYRES & WHEELS
  • - DRIVER/INTERNAL VISION
  • - ADDITIONAL HYBRID CHECKS

HOW LONG DOES A CAR SERVICE TAKE?

There is no set time for a vehicle service but an average guide time for a full service that would include a minimum 60-point check, is 3 hours. Any required repairs or additional work may extend this time. To book your car service, find your nearest qualified garage by entering your details below:
